Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah and senior leader Ripun Bora were arrested by Assam police along with party workers on Friday in Guwahati, during ongoing protest demanding justice for the death of Congress worker Mridul Islam, during Raj Bhavan protest.
They all are arrested and taken away in a police vehicle as the protest continued.
As the police chased and detained protesters, a group of Congress workers sat on the road in defiance. The situation worsened when party members clashed with the police near Janata Bhawan, with some protesters trying to break through the barricades.
The congress party took out the protest in demand of justice for Mridul Islam, a Congress worker who died during tear gas shelling by Assam police on Wednesday. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a police probe.
Earlier, this morning Indian Youth Congress (IYC) President Uday Bhanu Chib was detained by Assam Police at his hotel in Guwahati, who arrived in Guwahati to join protest.
In a statement issued by the IYC Presidentโs office, Chib condemned the action, saying, “This morning, I and other Youth Congress colleagues were detained from a hotel in Guwahati as if we were terrorists. Our mobile phones have been confiscated. We came here to seek justice for martyr Mridul Islam, but the murderous Assam Police will not accept this.”
