Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a strong warning against what he described as “strange people” visiting the state from outside and allegedly trying to influence sensitive issues. He said anyone found disrupting peace or engaging in fundamentalist activities will face arrest.
Outsiders Under Watch
Speaking to reporters at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Monday night, Sarma said, “We are keeping track of such people. They had also come during the NRC update process and spoiled the entire exercise. If they cross legal limits, they will be arrested.”
He claimed that some of these individuals, including advocates from Kerala and Mumbai, were trying to influence matters in Assam. “We will not tolerate politics on sensitive issues or fundamentalist activities, whether they come from Delhi, Kerala or Mumbai,” he added.
NRC Manipulation Allegations
The Chief Minister alleged that deliberate manipulation took place during the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update. According to him, outsiders exploited duplicate names to include individuals who did not qualify for the list.
He stated through social media, “Some suspicious people are coming to Assam from different parts of the country. There are many people who have come and spoiled our efforts during the NRC. We are keeping an eye on those people. If anyone goes one step beyond the rules they will be arrested.”
Sarma also linked some practices to the ideas of social activist Harsh Mander. He said the state government has collected evidence of anomalies over the last five years and is preparing to submit its findings to the Supreme Court.
