Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday assured that roads damaged by the recent floods in the Barak Valley region will be fully repaired before the upcoming Durga Puja festival. During his visit to the flood-hit areas of Sribhumi and Hailakandi, the CM addressed press conference and state multiple concerns, including road infrastructure, embankment safety and direct financial relief for flood-affected residents.
“Due to the ongoing monsoon, immediate road repair isn’t feasible. However, I will revisit the region after July and ensure the work is completed before Puja,” Sarma said during a press briefing in Sribhumi.
Assam CM state on Road Repair and Infrastructure Plans
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that restoration work on damaged roads would be a priority after the monsoon eases. He also mentioned the Gammon Bridge, where repair work is already underway and expected to be completed by July 20.
“There might be some inconvenience until then, but a permanent solution is being implemented,” he noted.
Flood Protection and Embankment Strengthening
To prevent future flood damage, Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika has been directed to oversee embankment strengthening in flood-prone areas across Barak Valley.
Relief for Flood Victims
On the subject of aid, Sarma assured that all affected families will receive direct cash relief promptly.
“We have collected bank account details of affected individuals. Once the floodwaters recede, relief funds will be directly transferred to their accounts,” he confirmed.

Temporary shelters, food supplies and basic medical care have already been arranged for displaced individuals. A detailed loss assessment is also being conducted by district officials to determine compensation for lost homes and belongings.
Current Flood Impact
As per the latest reports, more than 5,60,072 people across 19 districts have been affected by ongoing floods in Assam. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued warnings for thunderstorms and lightning in 18 districts as of Friday.
Sribhumi is among the most affected district in Assam, where 2,15,148 people suffering from flood.
