Assam Accident: 12 died and 30 injured in picnic bus-truck collision

On 3 January a devastating accident took place early morning, a speeding passenger bus carrying 45 individuals crashed into a stationary oil tanker in Dergaon, Assam. This accident took 12 people life.

Picnic Plans Turned Tragic

The accident occurred around 5 am in Balijan village near Deragaon, falling under the Golaghat East tehsil of Golaghat district, Assam. There was a total of 45 people in the bus on a picnic entourage. They was en route from Bosaborholla village to Bogibeel. Their itinerary included a visit to the renowned Tilinga Mandir. Unfortunately, tragedy struck before they could reach their destination.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shows Condolence for the people who lost there life in this accident. He wrote a post on X. He shows ex gratia for the deceased family and who injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to deceased family. Rs. 50,000 will be given to the injured.

Rising Casualty Count Accident of bus-truck in Assam

Sources report that 12 individuals of the picnic group, lost their lives in the accident. Three to four members of the same family has died, heightening the gravity of the situation. The local community expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing the need for the injured to recover swiftly. According some locals of the village said that they have left the village at around 3 am for picnic.

The collision occurred on National Highway 37, where the bus collided with the stationary oil tanker. Dense fog is suspected to have contributed to low visibility, and initial investigations suggest that the bus was overspeeding, further exacerbating the severity of the accident.

Injuries and Grim Update from Jorhat Medical College and Hospital

In addition to the fatalities, numerous passengers sustained serious injuries in the crash. Reports indicate that 30 individuals rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH). Tragically, two of them have succumbed to their injuries during treatment, and the condition of four to five others remains critical.

A senior doctor of the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital said that 30 people have admitted to the hospital . Among them some of the injured are in a critical condition. They are monitoring the injured people.

“We are currently investigating the cause behind this unfortunate accident. In a recent meeting with road safety experts from Delhi, NHDCL assured us that necessary measures, including proper signage and rectification work on the highway, will be completed within a month. Today’s incident is regrettable, and a comprehensive understanding of the accident’s details will only emerge once the police and relevant authorities conclude their investigation,” stated Golaghat Deputy Commissioner P Uday Praveen.
