The Cachar district unit of AIDSO (All India Democratic Students’ Organisation) held a strong protest in Silchar, demanding the cancellation of the CUET (Common University Entrance Test) system for college admissions.
The protesters said that CUET is unfair to students who have passed their Higher Secondary (HS) exams, especially those from Bengali-medium schools and poor families. They pointed out that many students cannot afford the high cost of application fees or private coaching needed for CUET.
A large rally was held, starting from AIDSO’s district office and marching to the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office. Protesters shouted slogans like “Cancel CUET” and “Give admission based on HS marks.”
AIDSO also submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor of Assam University through the DC. In it, they asked for a return to the traditional system where college admissions were based on HS exam results.
AIDSO leaders, including district president Swagata Bhattacharjee and secretary Swapan Choudhury, spoke at the event. They said CUET encourages centralisation and privatisation in education. They warned that if the system does not change, thousands of students from Barak Valley might miss the chance to go to college.
