The Ministry of Education is all set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the school for students from Class 3 onwards starting from the 2026-27 academic year. Officials have confirmed that a comprehensive framework for AI integration across all grades is currently being developed.
“We need to move quickly so that students and teachers are aligned with this transformative technology over the next two to three years,” said School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar. He added that the biggest challenge will be to reach out to over one crore teachers nationwide and orient them in imparting AI-based education. The CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) is leading the development of this framework.
A pilot project is already underway, enabling teachers to use AI tools for lesson planning. “Our aim is to prepare both learners and teachers for the digital economy,” Kumar added.
Kumar made these remarks during the release of a NITI Aayog report on AIand jobs, which highlighted that while two million traditional jobs may be displaced by automation, around eight million new roles could emerge if the right AI ecosystem is established.
Currently, over 18,000 CBSE schools already offer AI as a skill subject from Class 6 onwards through a 15-hour module, while Classes 9 to 12 can take it as an optional subject. Since 2019, more than 10,000 teachers have trained with support from Intel, BMI and the NIELIT.
