Barpeta Police arrested a youth for posting content on social media that hurt religious sentiments and inciting communal hatred on Thursday.
The youth identified as Mridul Ahmed a third-semester undergraduate student in the Assamese Department at Madhab Choudhury College, Barpeta, Assam. The post featured a derogatory image of Lord Shree Ram, prompting numerous complaints from Hindu organizations and student groups.
The incident came into light when student organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and right-wing Hindu organizations Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal filed separate FIRs in connection with the matter.
They also informed DGP GP Singh about the objectional post, which promote immediate action.
“The case is currently under investigation, with a registered case under BarpetaRoad PS C/No. 129/24 196 BNS RW Sec 67 IT Act” Barpeta police said.
Some students also demanded to expelled him from the college.
