A shocking incident took place in Silchar, where a man allegedly stabbed to death in Mailinibeel area of Tarapur, Silchar over land dispute on Friday night. The victim identified as Sarabindu Baishnab.

According to reports, the victim has logged an FIR against the accused, who killed him, a day before the murder incident.

Three Youths named Rahul Baishnab, Samiran Baishnab and Rabindra Baishnab – allegedly attack the victim with a knife while on his way to police station on Friday. The victim Sarabindu Baishnab’s wife Promila Baishnab, alleged that the trio with their relatives has been harassing their family for a long time to grab their land illegally.

Promila claimed that her husband Sarabindu Baishnab had been receiving threats for weeks from individuals trying to seize their land. A day before the fatal attack, Sarabindu had filed a complaint at Tarapur Police Station. According to Promila, “We are poor people who worked in Meghalaya for years to buy this land. They wanted to drive us out. Yesterday, the police summoned us to the station, but on the way, they ambushed my husband and stabbed him in the chest. He died on the spot.”

She further claimed that the attackers were relatives of Bisha Baishnab, the former landowner, who sold the property to them. After selling the land, Bisha’s sisters moved into a neighboring house and allegedly began harassing them. “They threatened us with sharp weapons and said they would kill us. We remained silent out of fear and helplessness,” Promila added.

The Tarapur Police have now registered a murder case based on the FIR filed by Promila against Rahul Baishnab, Samiran Baishnab, Rabindra Baishnab, and others. Notably, the police failed to act on the complaint of threats and torture made just a day before Sarabindu’s murder.

Sarabindu Baishnab is survived by his wife and three children — a 13-year-old son, a 5-year-old son, and a 3-year-old daughter.
