4 dead and several missing after a boat overturn in Jhelum River, Srinagar

A tragic incident took place in Srinagar capital of Jammu & Kashmir. A boat which carrying several passengers with 10 to 12 student has overturned in the river Jhelum on 16 April, morning. In this incident at least 4 people died and several were still missing.

The incident took place at the area of Gandbal Nowgam in Srinagar. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team has immediately launched rescue operation after they found the reports of the incident.

According to Medical Supeintendent of Sri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar, Muzaffar Zargar has said that seven people were brought to the Hospital among them 4 people has died. Other Three people were undergoing treatment.

Initial reports indicate that up to 12 children have been successfully rescued and are presently undergoing medical treatment at a nearby hospital. There are concerns for the safety of numerous others who are believed to be missing.

The boat that overturned was transporting children from Gandbal to Batwara in Srinagar.

Former CM of Jammu & Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti shows condolence after she knows about the incident. She wrote via his social media post, โ€œShocked to hear about the tragic accident in Batwara where a boat capsized. Reports coming in of several children dead. My deepest condolences to their families & I urge the administration to extend all help possible.โ€

Continual rainfall over the past few days has resulted in rising water levels across various waterways, notably the Jhelum. On Monday, landslide also took place to the Closer of the Jammu-Srinagar Highway.
