“We were kept in Kapashera’s red-light area,” said one of the victims who are the one of the 30 girls went to Delhi for work. “After completing the GDA course, we moved to Delhi. They promised to take care of our food and lodging. But when we arrived, we felt they wanted to exploit us. We realized we could be victims of human trafficking, so we contacted a guardian and escaped.”
Another student from the same center said, “We were told we’d work in renowned hospitals like Sharda Hospital. Upon arriving at the Sharda Hospital we were not assigned to the job. Instead upon we were taken in Ghaziabad cleaning sofas and dusting doors. When we objected, they said our job was cleaning, not patient care.”
She also said that they had to pay Rs 3000 in rent for lodging, but the hostel was unsafe. “Men were wandering around and sleeping with female residents. These all visualization frightened us. As we are from the humble background family we sold many dreams, which gave our parents hope. Now returning from this situation now we feel shattered.”
Some students who came from Delhi visited the SP Office to meet SP Numal Mahatta and file a complaint against the center manager Vivek Kumar, Soumitro Das and 8 among others.
The center’s spokesperson denied the allegations. He said, โYes, They stayed in Kapashera, where there are many government offices near the location. What they called it Red Light area. We never promised nursing jobs; it was a GDA course. If they thought they’d become nurses in six months, it’s not our fault.”
The investigation is ongoing. The allegations are serious, and it’s up to Cachar Police to take action.
