On 30 March 2024 President Droupadi Murmu conferred Bharat Ratna award to five recipients socialist icon, LK Advani, Chaudhary Charan Singh, former PM PV Narsimha Rao, former CM Karpoori Thakur and agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan.

Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of our country India. Bharat Ratna award ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi on 30 March 2024.

Karpoori Thakur

Bharat Ratna Award

President Droupadi Murmu conferred Bharat Ratna award to former Bihar CM Jannayak Karpoori Thakur. The award received by Karpoori Thakur son Ram Nath Thakur.

Karpoori Thakur was a socialist leader and also former chief minister of Bihar. He was called ‘Jannayak’ by his followers and respected for his efforts to empower backward castes. Thakur jailed during the Quit India Movement against British rule. He won his first election in 1952 and never lost any election afterward. In 1978, Karpoori Thakur initiated reservations for backward castes in government jobs in Bihar. This paved the way for the implementation of the Mandal Commission report in 1990. He served as chief minister from December 1970 to June 1971 and again from December 1977 to April 1979. Karpoori Thakur passed away on February 17, 1988.

PV Narasimha Rao

Bharat Ratna Award

President Droupadi Murmu conferred Bharat Ratna award to former PM Shri PV Narasimha Rao ji posthumously. The award was received by his son Shri PV Prabhakar Rao.

PV Narasimha Rao, was an Indian lawyer, politician, and statesman. He served as the 9th Prime Minister of India from 1991 to 1996. He was also a farmer and had previously been the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. PV Narasimha Rao held various ministerial positions, including Minister of External Affairs, Home Affairs, and Defense.

MS Swaminathan

Bharat Ratna Award

President Droupadi Murmu conferred Bharat Ratna award to agronomist MS Swaminathan. The award was received by MS Swaminathan’s daughter Nitya Rao.

MS Swaminathan born in 1925 August 7. His full name Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan. MS Swaminathan, widely recognized as the father of the Green Revolution in India. He obtained a BSc in Zoology from Maharajas College in Thiruvananthapuram, and another in Agricultural Sciences from Coimbatore Agricultural College. He pursued further studies, earning an MSc in Agricultural Sciences with a specialization in genetics and plant breeding from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), followed by a PhD from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

Chaudhary Charan Singh

President Droupadi Murmu conferred Bharat Ratna award to former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh (posthumously). The award has received by Chaudhary Charan Singh’s grandson Jayant Singh.

Chaudhary Charan Singh, born on December 23, 1902, was an Indian politician and freedom fighter. He served as the 5th Prime Minister of India from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980, and was also the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Charan Singh began his political career by winning a seat in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly and held it in subsequent elections. He served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh twice.

LK Advani

The fifth awardee LK Advani did not attend the ceremony due to illness. President Murmu is expected to deliver it to him tomorrow at his home.

Lal Krishna Advani was born in Karachi, Pakistan. After the partition, he moved to India and settled in Bombay. At the age of fourteen, he joined the RSS. In 1951, he joined the BJP, which founded by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He served as the BJP’s president three times. Advani entered Parliament in 1970 as a member of the Rajya Sabha. In 1989, he won his first Lok Sabha election from New Delhi. In 1991, Advani won from two constituencies: Gandhi Nagar in Gujarat and New Delhi. During Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister in 1999, Advani held the positions of Home Affairs Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Advani’s final election was in 2014 from Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat. In 2015, Lal Krishna Advani has honored with the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award.
