A Norwegian Journalist has triggered a global debate after questioning Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an official visit to Oslo. Soon after, she claimed that her Instagram and Facebook accounts were suspended. The sequence of events has raised fresh questions about press freedom, digital platforms, and diplomatic protocol.
The controversy began when a video surfaced online. In the clip, journalist Helle Lyng asked Prime Minister Modi why he does not take questions from what she described as “the freest press in the world.” The moment quickly went viral. As a result, it sparked intense reactions across social media platforms.
What Happened in Oslo?
The incident took place during a joint appearance between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. As the leaders were leaving, Lyng raised her question publicly. However, she later clarified that she did not expect an answer.
Soon after, she shared the video on X. In her post, she said it was her responsibility as a journalist to question powerful leaders. Moreover, she referred to global press freedom rankings. She pointed out that Norway ranks at the top, while India stands much lower in comparison.
Because of this, the video gained traction quickly. People across countries began debating the role of journalists. Some supported her stance. Others questioned the timing and setting of her remarks.
Suspension Claim Adds Twist
As the debate grew, the story took another turn. The Norwegian Journalist later claimed that she lost access to her Instagram and Facebook accounts. According to her, both platforms suspended her profiles without warning.
She said she was trying to reply to messages, especially from Indian users. However, she suddenly found herself locked out. Therefore, she informed her followers on X that her responses would be delayed.
In another update, she mentioned repeated login issues before the suspension. She described the situation as unexpected. At the same time, she called it a “small price to pay for press freedom.”
A screenshot she shared reportedly showed a platform notice. It stated that her account had been suspended and that she had 180 days to appeal. Otherwise, the platform may permanently remove it. The notice also said her profile was no longer visible.
MEA Responds to Questions
Meanwhile, the issue reached official discussions. During a press briefing, the journalist raised questions again. She asked Indian officials about trust and human rights concerns.
In response, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George addressed the matter firmly. He highlighted India’s democratic system. He stated that the Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to all citizens.
He also added that India represents one-sixth of the world’s population. Yet, it does not carry one-sixth of global problems. Furthermore, he said that anyone facing rights violations can approach the courts.
Because of this response, the discussion shifted again. It moved from social media to governance and democratic values.
Journalist Clarifies Her Stand
Amid rising speculation, Lyng issued further clarification. She denied claims linking her to any government agency. She clearly stated that she is a journalist based in Norway.
Additionally, she spoke about the nature of journalism. She said journalism can be uncomfortable at times. However, it remains necessary. According to her, journalists must question those in power.
She also explained that asking tough questions is part of the job. Even if answers do not come immediately, the effort matters. Therefore, she stood by her actions.
