Two people lost their lives and two others were injured after a landslide struck Jankalyan Society in Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli Parksite, Mumbai early Saturday morning, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The incident occurred around 2:39 am when soil and stones from a nearby hillock collapsed onto a hut. All four victims, who belonged to the same family, were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. Doctors declared Shalu Mishra (19) and Suresh Mishra (50) dead, while Aarti Mishra (45) and Ruturaj Mishra (20) sustained injuries. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Following the mishap, emergency teams from the fire brigade, police, and civic staff reached the spot for rescue operations. Authorities have shifted other residents of the affected area to safer locations.

The tragedy comes amid heavy rainfall that lashed Mumbai on Saturday, leading to widespread waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert has also been sounded for Nashik, Pune, Satara, and Jalgaon.

Last month, a similar landslide was reported in Mumbai’s Bhandup after hours of incessant rain. Although several houses were damaged, no casualties were reported in that incident.
