A tragic case from Assam’s Cachar district has reached its conclusion. A fast track court has awarded a Life Sentence to a 27-year-old woman for killing her two minor daughters. The verdict has sent shockwaves across the region.
The convicted woman, Ajmira Begum Laskar, drowned her children—aged three years and 10 months—in a pond near her home. The incident took place on September 1, 2023, at Baurikandi Part-1 in Sonai.
According to case records, the crime followed a dispute between Ajmira and her husband, Babul Haque Laskar, a daily wage labourer. Tension in the family had been ongoing. In fact, she had stayed at her parental home before returning just weeks earlier.
Confession and Court Verdict
During police interrogation, Ajmira confessed to the crime. She stated that she had planned to end her own life along with her daughters. However, she survived while the children did not.
She told investigators that she took the children to a nearby pond before dawn. There, she drowned them and later brought the bodies back home. Soon after, the children were rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Medical reports confirmed death due to drowning. Fluid was found in their lungs, which supported the findings.
The case moved forward after her husband filed an FIR at Kachudaram police station. During the trial, the prosecution argued that the act was intentional. The court agreed.
Additional Sessions Judge Bankim Sharma examined witness statements, medical reports, and the confession. Finally, the court found her guilty under Section 302 of the IPC and awarded a Life Sentence.
A Disturbing Case
This case raises serious concerns. Domestic conflict turned into a deadly act. While the accused cited emotional distress, the court treated it as a deliberate crime.
The judgment brings legal closure. However, the tragedy remains deeply disturbing. It highlights the need for awareness and support in families facing conflict.
