An IIT Guwahati student arrested on March 23 for joining the ISIS group. This news came to light after Assam Police DGP GP Singh announced a post on a social media site named X. In that, he wrote, โReference @IIT Guwahati student pledging allegiance to ISIS – the said student has been detained while travelling and further lawful follow up would take place.โ
This news came just four days after two ISIS India head leaders were caught in Assam, Dhubri.
How was the IIT Guwahati student Arrested?
According to Assam Police SP (STF), Kalyan Pathak, we got an email from the student in which he claimed that he was on his way to join ISIS. He also post a letter from his LinkedIn account An Open Letter. After receiving this email, we verified the authenticity of the contents and came out for an investigation.
He also said that after receiving this email, the police immediately contacted the IIT Guwahati authorities. The authorities informed that the student had been missing since noon. Even his mobile phone was switched off.
A search operation launched immediately to catch the student in Guwahati. In the evening of March 23, 2024, the student was caught in Hajo with the help of the locals. Hajo is 30 km from Guwahati.
Assam Police SP (STF) Kalyan Pathak said they brought him to the STF office after asking him some questions. Now, they’re just checking why he sent the email.
The student is identified as Tauseef Ali Farooqui. Who is a final year student of biotechnology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). He is a resident of Okhla, Delhi.
Police also said that they recovered a black flag, which is similar to the ISIS flag, from his hostel room. This is items were sent for verification to specialised agencies or forensic lab for examination.
Earlier, on March 20, the STF of Assam police arrested two top-rung leaders of ISIS terrorists, Haris Farooqi and Anurag Singh, from Dhubri, Assam. According to the police, the terrorists were arrested after they crossed over from Bangladesh. At around 4.15 am on March 24, the accused persons were detected in the Dhamasala area of Dhubri after they crossed the international border.
