A suspected pickpocket was tied to a pole by a group of people in GS road area of Guwahati on Thursday, after the man was allegedly caught stealing Rs 55,000 in cash from a passenger inside a city bus.
The incident has occurred near the Bhangagarh bus stop when the accused, identified as Abdul Ali, who reportedly tried to flee after stealing the money. The victim however noticed the theft and with help of other caught the pickpocket before he could escape.
Witnesses said the crowd overpowered Abdul Ali, tied him to a roadside pole, and thrashed him. A disturbing video circulating online shows the man’s hair being pulled as people laughed in the background. Thankfully, the accused did not sustain any serious injuries.
The victim had travelled from Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district to Guwahati for his son’s eye treatment at a private hospital and was carrying the cash meant for medical expenses when the incident happened. Police arrived shortly after being called, and take the accused under custody. According to the victim, the stolen money had not yet been recovered from the suspect.
