At the Grammy Awards 2024, Indian musicians make a history. On February 4, the 66th Grammy Awards ceremony took place. Indian artists Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain’s fusion band “Shakti” won the Grammy for “Best Global Music Album” on Monday. They received the award for their newest album, “This Moment.”
Zakir Hussain, along with Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, and acclaimed flute player Rakesh Chaurasia, secured a Grammy for “Best Global Music Performance” in Grammy Awards 2024 for their contribution to “Pashto.” Rakesh Chaurasia earned two Grammys that night, and Zakir Hussain clinched three in total.
Shankar Mahadevan after receiving award he said in Grammy Awards 2024 programme, “Thank you boys. Thank you God, family, friends, and India. India, we are proud of you…Last but not the least, I would like to dedicate this award to my wife whom every note of my music is dedicated to.”
Another album, “As We Speak” won the award for the Best contemporary instrumental album in Grammy Awards 2024. It is featured by Zakir Hussain along with Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, and acclaimed flute player Rakesh Chaurasia.
The album “This Moment,” released on June 30 of the previous year, features eight songs by John McLaughlin (guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (singer), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist). The talented ensemble, along with other performers like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido, earned Grammy nominations for their noteworthy contributions.

About Sakti Band:
The fusion band called Shakti recently won a Grammy for their latest album, “This Moment.” Shakti was originally formed in 1973, after the first version of the Mahavishnu Orchestra disbanded.
Shakti’s members are well-known artists like John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, V Selvaganesh, and Ganesh Rajagopalan. The band was reformed in 2020, and after 46 years, they released their first album as Shakti, titled “This Moment,” on June 23, 2023. The album features eight new compositions and performances, including tracks like “Shrini’s Dream,” “Bending the Rules,” “Karuna,” “Giriraj Sudha,” “Mohanam,” and “Las Palmas.”
