Bike New Rule: From January 1, 2026, all new two-wheelers sold in India must be equipped with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS), as per the draft rules issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The move aims to enhance rider safety and reduce road accidents involving motorcycles and scooters.

Under the new proposal, two-wheeler manufacturers will also be required to provide BIS Certified two protective helmet at the time of vehicle purchase. This ensures that both the rider and the pillion have certified helmets for safe travel.

Both riders of the bike should wear the helmet during the bike ride.

Violators of these safety norms will face strict penalties, including a fine of Rs 2,000 or suspension of their driving license for up to three months under Bike New Rule.

According to government data, almost 40% of India’s road accidents involved two-wheelers.

While the mandate is expected to significantly improve road safety, it may slightly increase the price of two-wheelers by around Rs 2,500, industry estimates suggest. Currently, ABS is mandatory only for two-wheeler models above 150cc.

ABS technology prevents wheel lock-up during sudden braking, reducing the risk of skidding and collisions. It works by rapidly pulsing the brakes, allowing riders to maintain control and steer safely even under emergency stops.
