Gauhati Medical College and Hospital stage protest, announce nationwide strike over Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case

On August 16, the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Assam has staged protest in demand of justice for the doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who was brutally raped and murder. They also announced suspension of all non-emergency services.

This decision has come after the recent incident of Kolkata RG Kar Medical College and also for violent mob attacks on protesting doctors in Kolkata. Around 400 doctors has participate from GMCH staged the protest.

The Junior Doctors’ Association of Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) has announced the decision.

Dr. Shreyasi Nath from GMCH reported that non-emergency services have suspended from today, following instructions from the Federation of Resident Doctorsโ€™ Association (FORDA). She said, โ€œFaculty members are handling OPDs, but junior doctors are not participating in OPDs, focusing only on emergency duties.โ€ The protest began from 8 a.m., resident doctors have not been providing non-emergency services.

Dr Dipjyoti Bharadwaj of GMCH stated, โ€œโ€œAll non-emergency OPDs and OTs suspended tomorrow and we are observing the 24-hour strike declared by the IMA.โ€

The key demands of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital doctors are:

  • The junior doctors demand a quick investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the immediate arrest of those involved in the attacks on RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
  • They call for the resignation of responsible officials at RG Kar Medical College. Should evidence of wrongdoing emerge, they want these individuals to face a CBI interrogation and prosecution.
  • The doctors insist on a written promise from the central government to implement the Central Protection Act (CPA) for healthcare professionals. This includes forming a legitimate body with national representation to ensure the safety of healthcare workers.

Dr. Kumarjyoti Deka, President of the Junior Doctors’ Association at GMCH, stated, โ€œThe recent events have revealed a serious failure in administrative accountability. Our actions demand justice and better protection for healthcare workers.โ€
