Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a major relief measure ahead of the festive season. The government will provide free LPG cylinders to eligible families during Bihu and Durga Puja.
This decision comes at a crucial time. The state has been facing concerns over LPG supply and alleged irregularities in distribution. Still, the government has stepped in with a people-focused move.
During a public gathering in Mahmora LAC, Sarma confirmed that each eligible household will receive two free cylinders. One will be provided during Bihu, while another will be given during Durga Puja. As a result, families will not have to worry about cooking fuel expenses during festivals.
However, there is a catch. The Chief Minister did not explain who qualifies for the benefit. So, the eligibility criteria remain unclear for now. This has left many residents waiting for more details.
Supply Issues and Government Response
Meanwhile, Assam has seen rising complaints about LPG distribution. Authorities have already conducted over 2,000 inspections. In addition, notices were issued to several distributors after irregularities surfaced through customer complaints and social media reports.
Because of this, daily life has been affected. Many roadside eateries and small restaurants have either shut down or reduced operations. Some have even switched to alternatives like firewood or electric cooking.
Despite these issues, the government maintains that there is no real shortage. Sarma has urged people not to panic or engage in hoarding. Officials also said that domestic LPG supply remains stable, while commercial allocation has been increased recently.
Alongside the Free LPG announcement, the Chief Minister also highlighted future plans. He spoke about education support for children and new development projects in the region.
