Assam’s Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has resign from his post following a series of Right to Information (RTI) petitions filed against his brother, entrepreneur and cultural organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta.

According to sources, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had advised Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta to resign after multiple RTI applications were submitted seeking details related to his brother’s professional and cultural activities. Acting on the Chief Minister’s advice, Mahanta formally tendered his resignation.

A former Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, Mahanta had taken charge as the State Chief Information Commissioner earlier this year. An officer of the 1988 Assam-Meghalaya IPS cadre, he had previously served as Director General of Border and was widely respected for his integrity and dedication to public service.

Mahanta’s resignation has stirred discussions about transparency and accountability in governance, especially as the RTI revelations continue to raise public concern.

The state government has not yet announced who will succeed Mahanta as the next Chief Information Commissioner.
