On February 14, 2019 Indian witnessed a deadliest terror attack in which 40 CRPF Jawan loss their life and many other injured in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Pulwama attack took place at around 3:15 pm, when CRPF Jawan was travelling from Jammu to Srinagar. The convoy was consisted of 78 vehicles carrying about 2,500 Jawan. As they were on their way, a car filled with explosives crashed into one of the buses near Lethpora, Awantipora, causing a huge explosion. The attack led to deep sorrow and anger across the country, making this day a reminder of the sacrifice of soldiers. Since, Pulwama attack Indian citizen observe 14th February as Black Day to pay respect to the martyrs and stand against terrorism.

Effect on Valentine’s Day Celebrations: Since 2019, Valentine’s Day celebrations have reduced in some cities due to the growing importance of Black Day.

On February 14, 2019, deadliest terror attacks linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) targeted a convoy of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.

India launched counter attack: To take avenge on Pulwama Attack, India on February 26, 2019, launched a counter attack named ‘Operation Bandar’, to strike JeM camp in Pakistan. In this attack India strike JeM camp in Balakot, Pakistan with 12 Mirage and 2000 jets. The jets dropped Israil-made smart bombs on JeM camp, believed to house hundreds of militants. India called the strike a ‘non-military’ and ‘pre-emptive’ action to prevent future attacks, claiming significant damage with no civilian harm.

How did India Honor the martyrs of Pulwama attack?

India honored the martyrs of the Pulwama attack through various heartfelt gestures, including candlelight vigils, moments of silence, prayers, and financial support. The government took several initiatives to assist the families of the fallen soldiers, offering compensation, employment, educational opportunities and healthcare.

The Next of Kin (NoK)/families of CRPF personnel killed in the Pulwama attack have been provided the following compensation/benefits:- Rs. 35 Lakh as Central Ex-gratia lump sum compensation, Rs. 5 Lakh as Ex-gratia from duty State, Rs. 20 Lakhs from Risk Fund of CRPF, Rs. 1.5 Lakhs from Central Welfare Fund of CRPF, Rs. 30 Lakhs from SBI Para Military Salary Package cover. In addition, NoKs of martyrs have paid Ex-Gratia from Home States as per the rules of the State concerned. Voluntary donors have also contributed upto Rs.15 lakhs through ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ portal.

In addition, public places and institutions were named in memory of the brave souls. Among the notable honors, Head Constable Abdul Rashid Kalas was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, while 15 other CRPF personnel were bestowed the Shaurya Chakra. Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman received the Vir Chakra for his courage.
