In a horrifying incident from the Lakhipur sub-division of Assam’s Cachar district, a man allegedly tried to set his wife on fire on suspicion of having an extramarital affair. The accused, identified as Tapan Kahar, has been arrested by the police.
The shocking episode unfolded late Monday night at the Bandu Tea Estate under Lakhipur. According to reports, Tapan Kahar, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, returned home and found his wife, Rima Kahar, talking on the phone. Consumed by jealousy and suspicion, he accused her of speaking with her alleged lover. The confrontation quickly escalated into a violent argument.
In a fit of rage, Tapan reportedly poured petrol on his wife and set her ablaze. Rima sustained severe burn injuries and collapsed at the scene. Her desperate cries for help drew neighbours to the house, who managed to rescue her and rushed her to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). She remains in critical condition under intensive care.

Following a police complaint, officers reached the spot and detained Tapan Kahar on Tuesday. An investigation is underway to uncover further details surrounding the case.
The gruesome attack has left residents of Bandu Tea Estate in shock, with many condemning the brutal act and calling for strict punishment for the accused.
