Legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89, marking the end of an era in Indian cinema. The veteran star had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month and was discharged after treatment. His family had said he was recovering, but on November 24, an ambulance was seen leaving his residence, and several celebrities arrived at the Juhu crematorium. While the family has not issued an official statement, filmmaker Karan Johar confirmed the news of his demise.
Karan Johar Shared a Emotional message
He shared, “It is an end of an ERA….. a massive mega star… the embodiment of a HERO in mainstream cinema… incredibly handsome and the most enigmatic screen presence … he is and will always be a bonafide Legend of Indian Cinema… defining and richly present in the pages of cinema history … but mostly he was the best human being… he was so loved by everyone in our industry …. He only had immense love and positivity for everyone … his blessings, his hug and his incredible warmth will be missed more than words can describe ….”
Karan also added, “Today there is a gaping hole in our industry … a space that can never be filled by anyone … there will always be the one and only DHARAMJI… we love you kind Sir…. We will miss you so much…. The heavens are blessed today…. It will always be my blessing to have worked with you…. And my heart says with respect, reverence and love…. Abhi Na jao chodke…. Dharmendra leaves behind an extraordinary legacy spanning six decades and more than 300 films. Although the cause of death has not been disclosed, the actor had been unwell since November 1. Dharmendra: The He-Man of Bollywood
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali, Punjab, he made his debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. His rise to fame came swiftly in the mid-1960s with critically acclaimed roles in Phool Aur Patthar and Anupama.
Known for his versatility, Dharmendra balanced drama, romance, comedy, and action with ease. His performance in Hrishikesh Mukerjee’s Chupke Chupke showcased his impeccable comic timing.
In 2012, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.
Dharmendra’s Family
Dharmendra was married to Prakash Kaur and later to actress Hema Malini, his frequent co-star. He is survived by his six children—Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta, and Ajeeta with Prakash Kaur; and Esha Deol and Ahana Deol with Hema Malini.
