In a late-night encounter at Salakati in Assam ’s Kokrajhar district, security forces encounter the alleged mastermind behind the recent railway track explosion.
The deceased, identified as Ipil Murmu, was a Maoist leader from Jharkhand who had been operating secretly in Assam for the past few months. According to official sources, Murmu played a key role in orchestrating the IED explosion between Kokrajhar and Salakati railway stations on October 23.
Reports suggest that Murmu was leading a small extremist group attempting to expand their network across lower Assam. Acting on precise intelligence, security personnel launched a joint operation in the Salakati area on Friday night, during which Murmu was fatally shot.
Originally from Jharkhand, Murmu had infiltrated Assam to coordinate subversive and recruitment activities. Following his death, security forces have intensified combing operations in the region to track down his remaining associates and dismantle the Maoist network.
The IED blast occurred around 1:00 am on Thursday, damaging a portion of the railway track along the Alipurduar division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and disrupting train movement for several hours.
Teams from the Assam Police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and intelligence agencies rushed to the spot soon after the explosion. Bomb disposal squads and forensic experts examined the debris to determine the type of explosive used.
Train services were later restored after engineers completed repair works on the damaged track section.
