The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a Special Revision of Assam’s electoral rolls, with January 1, 2026 set as the qualifying date. According to a circular issued by the ECI Secretary to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, the final electoral roll will be published on February 10, 2026.

The revision will conducted under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Pre-revision activities scheduled from November 18 to 21, which include printing essential documents and training officials. This will followed by a house-to-house verification drive from November 22 to December 20, during which Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will verify voter details, rationalise polling stations, and correct discrepancies in the electoral rolls and EPICs.

From December 21 to 26, Formats 1 to 8 and the integrated draft roll will prepared. The draft roll will published on December 27, and citizens can file claims and objections from December 27, 2025, to January 22, 2026.

CM Himanta Biswa Stated, “Assam government welcomes the decision to make a special amendment of the voter list by the Election Commission of India with 1 January 2026 as eligibility date. This initiative will help ensure transparent, promoted and proper voter list for all eligible citizens. Assam will extend all kinds of cooperation to the Election Commission of India to complete this amendment with complete transparency and within deadline.

The Govt of Assam welcomes the Election Commission of India’s decision to undertake a Special Revision of the electoral roll with 01.01.2026 as the qualifying date.

This will help ensure clean, updated and accurate electoral rolls for all eligible citizens.

Assam will extend full cooperation to the Election Commission of India to complete the revision in a transparent and time-bound manner.”

Cachar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav explained that a Special Summary Revision carried out annually to add new voters and remove ineligible names. With elections nearing, the Special Revision aims to further strengthen and finalise the voter list. He noted that this exercise, different from the Special Intensive Revision recently undertaken in Bihar and other states.

The ECI has directed Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to ensure that no eligible voter is excluded and no ineligible name is included. BLOs will receive prefilled registers for verification, and EROs will reassess polling stations to ensure none exceed the 1,200-voter limit, except with prior approval.

The Commission also ordered 100% removal of duplicates and multiple entries flagged during system checks and field verification.

Assam excluded last month from the nationwide SIR due to ongoing citizenship-related matters under Supreme Court supervision. The State set to hold Assembly elections next year, making this Special Revision crucial for ensuring an accurate and updated voter list.
