Himanta Biswa Sarma is all set for an Assam CM return after being unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP-led NDA in the state Assembly. The decision came on Sunday, May 10, during a crucial meeting held in Guwahati.

The announcement was made by J. P. Nadda, who attended the meeting as the central observer. Notably, eight BJP legislators proposed Sarma’s name for the top post. Soon after, all members extended their support, making the decision unanimous. Meanwhile, Nayab Singh Saini was also present as co-observer during the meeting.
Strong NDA Support and Next Steps
In addition, NDA allies like Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front backed Sarma’s leadership. Their support further strengthened his position as the alliance leader. As a result, the path is now clear for his swearing-in as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term.
Later in the day, Sarma, along with senior NDA leaders, is expected to meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhawan. During the meeting, the alliance will formally stake claim to form the new government.
Importantly, the BJP-led NDA secured a decisive victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections. The alliance won 102 seats in the 126-member House, ensuring a comfortable majority. Out of this, the BJP alone bagged 82 seats, while its allies AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each.
Therefore, with a strong mandate and united support, the Assam CM is ready to begin a new term. The focus now shifts to governance and development for the next five years.
