The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved a series of major decisions aimed at strengthening community inclusion, preserving cultural heritage, and improving institutional governance across the state.
ST Status for Six Communities Moves Forward
In a historic step, the Cabinet approved the report submitted by the Group of Ministers (GoM) on granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six key communities of Assam—Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes (Adivasis).
The GoM was led by Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, with Ministers Pijush Hazarika and Keshab Mahanta as members.
With this approval, the report will now placed before the Assam Legislative Assembly and later forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs for final consideration.
This marks a crucial advancement in fulfilling a long-standing sociopolitical demand.

Land Approved for Assam Textile Heritage Museum
The Cabinet also approved the transfer of three bighas of land from the Government Muga Farm at Reshom Nagar, Khanapara, to the Cultural Affairs Department.
The land will used to build a state-of-the-art textile museum showcasing Assam’s rich weaving traditions. The project will supported by JSW I&P Holdings Pvt. Ltd.
A key highlight of the museum will be the historic Vrindavani Vastra, a rare and culturally significant textile from the era of Srimanta Sankardeva, which will be brought on loan from the British Museum in London.
New Service Rules for ASSTC Teachers
Additionally, the Cabinet approved the Assam Survey and Settlement Training Centre Teachers’ Service Rules, 2025.
The updated rules will streamline recruitment, service conditions, and career progression for faculty at the Assam Survey & Settlement Training Centre (ASSTC) in Dakhingaon, Guwahati.
The new framework aims to enhance institutional efficiency, professional standards, and training quality, strengthening land administration capacity in the state.
Focus on Welfare, Culture, and Reforms
These decisions reflect the Assam government’s broader vision of empowering communities, preserving cultural heritage, and implementing administrative reforms for sustainable development across the state.
