An eight-year-old girl lost her life in a tragic hit-and-run incident near the Bon Durga Mandir in Hattichhara, Cachar, on Thursday evening (December 4). According to locals, the speeding bike fled the spot immediately after knocking her down.
The victim has been identified as Ripa Goala, daughter of Sajal Goala and a resident of Haticherra Tea Estate near Udharbond. The incident occurred around 5 PM when Ripa was returning home from the Haticherra Bon Durga Temple. Eyewitnesses said a fast-moving bike, allegedly coming from Borkhola towards Silchar, hit the child and escaped before anyone could react.
Residents rushed to rescue Ripa and took her to the Udharbond Primary Health Centre, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Upon receiving the report, Yakub Ali, Second Officer of Udharbond Police Station, reached the location, began the investigation, and sent the body to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
A local resident described the chaos at the scene:
“By the time we heard about the accident and reached the road, the bike was already gone. We couldn’t even note the registration number.”
Hit-and-run cases have been steadily rising in Barak Valley, raising concerns about road safety and the urgent need for stronger enforcement measures.
