Tension erupted at the Indo-Bangladesh border area of Jalalpur in Katigorah, Cachar district, Assam. On Tuesday night around 30 Bangladeshi nationals were caught by locals for allegedly trying to cross the border illegally.
On Tuesday night a group, which included men, women, and children, was traveling in five overcrowded auto-rickshaws saw by locals. Suspicious locals in West Katigorah stopped the vehicles around 9 PM and questioned the passengers. When they failed to show valid ID or explain their presence, residents quickly informed the police. Upon receiving information, police from the Ghumra Investigation Centre promptly arrived at the spot.

According to sources, many of these individuals had been living in India for several years and were working as labourers, with some claiming to have stayed in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. On Tuesday night, they were reportedly trying to return to Bangladesh with the help of local agents or touts.
Some of the detainees told locals they were heading to Gopalganj, Jessore and Barishal in Bangladesh. Cachar Police soon arrived and took all 30 people into custody. They were later moved to the Police Hospital in Silchar, located near the Central Jail, where they were kept overnight.
Police have launched an investigation to identify and take action against the agents involved in the illegal border crossing.
