At least 10 new born babies died and 39 other rescued, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi, where fire broke out last night (November 15).
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered a detailed investigation into the incident and asked for a report by Saturday evening. He has also announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased children and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
Deputy chief minister Brijesh Pathak reached at the Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi, where fire broke out on Saturday morning. He said, a total of 49 infant were in the ward, which have only 18 bed capacity, where new born babies died and injured.
He stated, seven children have identified, while three remains unidentified. Pathak also stated, 17 other children are injured, who receiving treatment in the emergency wing of the medical college and various private hospital.
PM Narendra Modi condoled the death of children by stating, โHeartbreaking! The fire accident at Jhansi Medical College in Uttar Pradesh is heart wrenching. My deepest condolences to those who have lost their innocent children in this. I pray to God to give them the strength to bear this immense loss. The local administration, under the supervision of the state government, is making every possible effort for relief and rescueโ
He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs.2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in the fire accident at Jhansi Medical College in Uttar Pradesh. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.

- Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who is also in charge of health, said the fire likely started due to a short circuit in the oxygen concentrator. However, an eyewitness told India Today that the fire began when a nurse lit a matchstick inside the ward to fix an oxygen cylinder pipe.
- The fire broke out at around 10:30 pm on Friday, which led the causing panic and chaos in the hospital.
- According to information, it found that it took over two hours to control the flames. Images showed that the equipment in the newborn’s ward completely burned.
- The rescue operation completed around 1 am.
- Eyewitnesses said smoke was first seen coming from the NICU around 10:45 pm, causing panic as people raised alarms. Before anyone could act, flames spread through the ward. Efforts to evacuate the babies were hindered by thick smoke and flames blocking the door. Firefighters arrived quickly and managed to save the other infants.
