Tension erupted outside the Newly constructed Baksa Jail as Zubeen Garg’s fans throw shoes, sandals and stones at the vehicle carrying the 5 accused in the high-profile Zubeen Garg death case. Protesters even attempted to break the prison gate to confront the accused.

Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen Garg’s cousin Sandeepan Garg and two personal security officers, Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Bora, have been transferred to the newly constructed Baksa district jail in Assam. They were placed under 14-day judicial custody after being produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Kamrup (Metro) on Wednesday morning.

The decision to shift the accused to Baksa came after their legal counsel highlighted safety concerns. This suggesting that sending them to Guwahati Central Jail—home to several notorious criminals, including ULFA members—could put them at risk.

The transfer was facilitated under the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System (LADCS), a government initiative that provides legal assistance to eligible individuals in criminal cases through offices managed by State and District Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs and DLSAs) under the guidance of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The accused, which include Northeast Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, were lodged in Baksa district jail to ensure their protection following completion of their police remand.
