Tension escalated in parts of Assam’s Dima Hasao district late Monday night after an individual was killed in a police firing incident during a routine patrol.
The incident took place around 9 pm when a police team was conducting regular patrolling duties. Reports suggest that an unidentified individual allegedly opened fire at the security personnel. In a bid to defend themselves, the police retaliated, resulting in the person being shot dead on the spot.
Sources indicate that the deceased is suspected to have links with an insurgent or militant group active in the region. However, officials are yet to confirm the identity or affiliation of the individual.
Following the encounter, additional security forces were deployed as a precaution, and a massive search operation was launched to ensure no other armed suspects were present in the vicinity.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
