Sribhumi police have arrested a senior education officer, Sumeru Nath, for allegedly running a major drug trafficking operation in the district.
Nath, who worked as a Cluster Resource Centre Coordinator under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme, was identified as the leader of the operation after a large drug bust in Badarpur on November 6.
Superintendent of Police of Sribhumi, Partha Pratim Das led the operation. In this operation police first resulted four drug traffickers. During interrogation, they revealed about the role of Sumeru Nath as the mastermind behind the network.
Police sources suggest that he might be involved in drug trafficking for a long time while working in the education sector.
His arrest raises serious concerns about the link between organised crime and the education system in the area. Further investigation is underway.
