Assam Coal Mine Accident: 1 body recovered; Rescue operation underway

On Wednesday morning, one dead body recovered from the Coal Mine at 3 Kilo, Umrangso, Assam, where 9 individual trapped since January 6. The dead person identified as Sri Ganga Bahadur Srestho of Nepal. The NDRF, Indian Army, Assam Rifles, SDRF and other emergency agencies are working relentlessly to rescue the trapped worked.

According to information, the mine workers went 300 feet below the surface at inside the Asom Quarry coal mine. They started work at 6 am on January 6 but within two hours the coal mine feel with water from a nearby abandoned. In this situation several workers managed to escape but 9 workers trapped.

Earlier, on January 7, it has said that three workers confirmed dead, that their bodied found floating in the flooded mine.

Rescue operation is still going on at Umrangso Coal Mine, Assam.

Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Wednesday morning, โ€œ21 Para divers have just recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family.โ€

He also stated, โ€œThe body recovered from the well has been identified as Sri Ganga Bahadur Srestho from Udayapur district, Nepal.โ€

Earlier he stated, โ€œUPDATE The rescue operation is in full swing with Army and NDRF divers having already entered the well. Navy personnel are on-site, making final preparations to dive in after them. Meanwhile, SDRF de-watering pumps have departed from Umrangshu for the location. Additionally, the ONGC de-watering pump has been loaded onto an MI-17 helicopter at Kumbhigram, awaiting weather clearance for deployment.โ€

Earlier yesterday, a case has been registered under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025. The case cites Sections 3(5)/105 BNS, r/w Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957to investigate the incident. Pointing to the operation of an illegal mine. One person, identified as Punish Nunisa, has been arrested in connection with the case.
