North East Express derailed: On Wednesday night, a devastating incident unfolded when six coaches of the Delhi-Kamakhya North East Express derailed near Bihar’s Buxar district. The derailment occurred at 9:53 pm, leading to a severe and tragic situation.
At least six passengers tragically lost their lives in this horrific derailment. Approximately 100 other passengers sustained injuries and were promptly provided medical care at local hospitals. Those with severe injuries were swiftly transferred to AIIMS, Patna, for critical treatment.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw extended his condolences for the lives lost and pledged to investigate the root cause of the derailment.Evacuation and rescue operations have been successfully completed, and all coaches underwent thorough inspection.

The Train North East Express derailed:

The train involved was the 23-coach 12506 North East Express. Which had departed from Delhi’s Anand Vihar terminal at 7:40 am on Wednesday. Embarking on its approximately 33-hour journey to Kamakhya, located about six kilometers away from Guwahati.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses, including local resident Hari Pathak, described the incident as follows: The train was traveling at a normal speed when suddenly a loud sound heard, and a plume of smoke rose from the train. On investigating, it was evident that the train had derailed, with the AC coaches suffering the most significant damage.

Accident and Damage Assessment:

Jagdishpur SDPO Rajiv Chandra Singh reported that the accident had caused damage to electric wires, poles, and rail tracks. While some coaches lost balance and fell, none had overturned, which helped limit the number of casualties. He also noted that technical experts would provide detailed information regarding the accident’s cause.

Immediate Relief Measures on North East Express derailed:

Immediate relief measures were swiftly initiated, including the dispatch of ambulances and medical personnel to the scene.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav assured that the departments of disaster management and health were instructed to take prompt action in providing relief to as many affected people as possible. Medical teams and health workers at hospitals in Jagdishpur, Shahpur, and District Bhojpur were prepared for rescue and relief operations. Ambulances from Rohtas, Buxar, and Bhojpur districts were sent to the accident site.
Alternative Transportation Arrangements:Efforts were made to transport passengers of the derailed train to their respective destinations. A temporary train (known as a “scratch rake”) dispatched from Patna, along with six buses, to ensure passenger safety. Additionally, a rake from Ara arranged to assist stranded passengers in completing their onward journeys. Medical teams sent to the site, and local hospitals in Buxar town were alerted to provide support.

Train Diversions and Cancellations:

In the aftermath of the incident, at least 18 trains operating on the route, including the Rajdhani Express between Delhi and Dibrugarh, have been diverted.
Train Cancellations and Partial Cancellations:
Several trains were canceled, including Patna-Puri Special (03230), Sasaram-Ara Special (03620), Bhabua Road Express Special (03617), Patna-DDU Memu Pass Spl (03203), and Patna-Buxar Memu Pass Special (03375). Additionally, two trains were partially canceled, including Patna-DDU Express (13209), which will run up to Ara, and DDU-Patna Express (13210), which will also run up to Ara.
Train Diversions:
Several trains diverted onto alternate routes, including Pune-Danapur SF Express (12149), Patliputra SF Express (12141), Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express (12424), Vikramshila Express (12368), Kamakhya Express (15623), Guwahati Express (15633), Rajendra Nagar Terminal Tejas Rajdhani Express (12310), Bhagalpur Garib Rath Express (22406), Anvt Rdp Express (22488), among others.

Ex-Gratia Announcement:

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced an ex-gratia of โ‚น4 Lakh for each family of the deceased in the North East Express train derailment in Buxar. It as confirmed by the Bihar CMO in an official statement.
