Nepal Floods: 112 killed in Nepal due to heavy rain, landslides, floods, 68 missing

Devastating floods and landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Nepal, that claimed the life of at least 112 people in the last 24 hours, as per official website.

At least, over 100 people injured and rescue operation is going on to locate 68 people who have gone missing due to calamity in the Himalayan Country.

Kathmandu reported the highest number of death with the account of 48, Kavrepalanchowk district 34 people died, Lalitpur 20 people died and Dhading 15 people died. The other affected areas are Makwanpur, Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, panchthar, Bhaktapur, Dhankuta, Solukhumbu, Ramchhap, Mahottari and Sunsari districts.

From Thursday, Nepal has experienced relentless rainfall, leads to the widespread warnings of floods, Nepal Police Deputy Spokesperson Bishwo Adhikari, reported 66 people killed in the country. The flood also injured 60 people and rescued more than 3000 people. Meanwhile, at least 195 houses and 8 bridges damaged.

Nepal Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak confirmed of severe damage in the Kathmandu Valley. Ramesh Lekhak said, โ€œThe Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police are conducting the search and rescue operation all across the nation.โ€

Nepal Floods: Nepal recorded rainfall in 54 years

On Saturday, Nepal experienced its heaviest rainfall in 54 years, with 323 millimeters of rain recorded in just 24 hours.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority (NDRRMA) ha warned 56 out of 77 districts of Nepal of potential disaster due to heavy rainfall.

Arun Bhakta Shrestha, Climate and Environmental expert at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) said, “Iโ€™ve never before seen flooding on this scale in Kathmandu.โ€

In Nepal more than 3000 security personnel deployed in the affected area to assist the rescue effort with helicopter and motor boats. It is expected that at least 412,000 households to be affected due to monsoon related disaster.

Rivers around Kathmandu overflowed, which cause flooding nearby homes. Kathmandu main river, the Bagmati, has also been flowing above the danger level due to heavy rain.

In response to the disaster, the government also closed all schools in Nepal for three days and postponed ongoing exams. Kathmandu had a power outage all day because floods disrupted the main transmission line, but power was restored by evening. Landslides have also blocked all roads leading to Kathmandu.
