Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled India’s ambitious goal of hosting the Olympic Games in 2036. Addressing the International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai, PM Modi expressed the dream of 140 crore Indians to witness their nation hosting the esteemed Olympic Games. While he did not specify the candidate city during his speech, Ahmedabad is seen as a frontrunner. Additionally, PM Modi announced India’s interest in hosting the 2029 Youth Olympic Games, serving as a rehearsal for the 2036 Summer Olympics. The upcoming Olympics in 2024 will be hosted in Paris. The next Olympics, which are in 2028, will be hosted by Los Angeles and Brisbane in 2032. India is in competition with Poland, Mexico, and Indonesia for the privilege of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, with the decision expected in at least three years, according to the IOC.
Preparations in Gujarat
The state of Gujarat is actively gearing up to become the host of this grand sporting spectacle. The Gujarat government has secured approval for construction from the central government, with four sites identified around Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
To facilitate the comprehensive preparations, the Gujarat Olympics Planning and Infrastructure Corporation Limited, a specialised body, has been established.
Key Venue: Sardar Patel Sports Enclave:
The Sardar Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad. Which already hosts the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, is envisioned as a central hub for the hosting region.
Potential sports hubs:
Gujarat has meticulously curated a list of 33 potential sports hubs across the state. Which includes venues like Shivrajpur, the iconic Statue of Unity, and the expansive seafront of Surat. This are favoured for water sports events.
Olympic Village:
A pivotal aspect of the plan is the proposed Olympic Village, strategically situated in close proximity to the Narendra Modi Stadium. This village will serve as the accommodation and training centre for athletes.
Diverse Sports Excellence:
The Gujarat Olympics Planning and Infrastructure Corporation Limited is actively working to facilitate over 20 different sports within this dynamic enclave, offering a rich tapestry of athletic prowess.
Government Involvement and Oversight:
The Gujarat Government has proactively engaged with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) and the Gandhinagar Urban Development Authority (GUDA) to identify potential sites between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is leading this monumental endeavour. And also he has personally overseen two significant meetings to ensure meticulous preparations.
