Prime Minister Modi Extends Congratulations Indian Para-Athletes
Indian para-athletes have etched their names in history by winning more than 100 medal at the 4th Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou, China, on October 28. They won 111 medals in total. On Saturday, 28 October, 2023 India added 12 more medals. This medal includes four gold medals. Seven medals came from Chess, four from athletics and one from rowing.
Their remarkable achievements were lauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He commended the athletes for their unwavering dedication and exceptional talent. He emphasized that they serve as an inspiration to the entire nation. In a social media post, Prime Minister Modi expressed his immense pride and gratitude for the athletes, coaches and the entire support system that contributed to this milestone.

Indian Para-Athletes Dilip Mahadu Gavit Clinches Gold
In an outstanding display of skill, Dilip Mahadu Gavit secured a gold medal in the Men’s 400m T47 event. By completing the race in an impressive 49.48 seconds. This significant victory marked India’s most successful Para Asian Games campaign to date. With a total of 29 gold medals, 31 silver medals, and 51 bronze medals.
Sumit Antil’s World Record Throw
Reigning Paralympics champion Sumit Antil added to India’s glory by clinching a gold medal in the javelin throw F64 event with a world record effort of 73.29m. This remarkable achievement occurred on the third day of competitions, making it India’s most productive day at the Games. India’s medal tally for the day reached a staggering 24 medals, including 17 gold medals, all of which were in athletics.
Indian Para-Athletes Standings
Following this outstanding performance, India ended Day 2 ranked sixth in the overall standings. They were behind China, who led with 299 medals (117 gold). Followed by Iran (73 medals), Japan (68 medals), Thailand (63 medals), and Uzbekistan (55 medals).
Domination in Discus Throw
Indian para-athletes demonstrated their dominance in the men’s F54/55/56 discus throw event, securing all three medals. Neeraj Yadav won the gold with a Games and Asian record distance of 38.56m, while Yogesh Kathuniya (42.13m) and Muthuraja (35.06m) claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Ankur Dhama’s Historic Double Gold
Ankur Dhama created history by becoming the first Indian to win two gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Para Games. He clinched the top spot in the men’s T11 1500m race with a time of 4:27.70, having previously won gold in the men’s T11 5000m race.
Sundar Singh Gurjar’s World Record
Sundar Singh Gurjar set a new world record in the men’s F46 javelin throw. He achieved a distance of 68.60m and securing the gold. This remarkable feat surpassed the previous world record of 67.79m held by Dinesh Mudiyanselage Herath of Sri Lanka. In this event, Indian athletes swept all three medals, with Rinku (67.08m) and Ajeet Singh (63.52m) taking the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Women’s T11 1500m Event
In the women’s T11 1500m event, Indian athletes secured a 1-2 finish, with Rakshitha Raju (5:21.45) winning the gold and Killaka Lalitha (5:48.85) taking the silver. Rakshitha had previously won gold in the same event at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta.
Haney and Nimisha Suresh Chakkungalparambil Shine
Haney produced a Games record of 55.97m in the men’s F37/38 javelin throw, and Nimisha cleared 5.15m to claim a gold medal for India.
Medals in Various Disciplines
Indian para-athletes also performed exceptionally in other events. Pooja won a silver in women’s F54/55 discus throw with a distance of 18.17m. Narayan Thakur and Shreyansh Trivedi picked up a bronze each in men’s T35 200m and T37 200m with times of 29.83 and 25.26, respectively.
Para Table Tennis, Archery, and Badminton Achievements
In para table tennis, Bhavina Patel, a Tokyo Paralympics medalist, won a bronze in women’s singles Class 4. In para-archery, India secured two silver medals and a bronze. Armless archers Sheetal Devi and Sarita won a silver medal, and the men’s doubles compound pair of Rakesh Kumar and Suraj Singh clinched another silver. Harvinder Singh and Sahil secured a bronze in the men’s doubles recurve event.
In para badminton, Pramod Bhagat and Manisha Ramdass earned a bronze in the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 category.
Para Powerlifting Success
In para powerlifting, Zainab Khatun and Rajkumari won a silver and a bronze, respectively, in the women’s 61kg category. Zainab lifted 85kg, while Rajkumari had a successful lift of 84kg.
