IMD Predicts Heavy to Heavy Rainfall till 1st June for Northeast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several Northeastern states and the Sub-Himalayan West Bengal region, which is expected to continue until June 1, 2025.

This alert comes amid widespread showers and flooding fears in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of West Bengal and Sikkim.

IMD Rainfall Forecast Highlights:

  • Northeast India will continue to receive light to moderate rainfall at many locations for the next 7 days.
  • Isolated very heavy rain is likely in:
    • Arunachal Pradesh – May 31
    • Assam & Meghalaya – June 1
    • Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura – May 31 & June 1

Rainfall Recorded in Past 24 Hours (Till 8:30 AM IST Today):

Some of the highest rainfall was recorded in:

  • Cherrapunji (East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya) – 47 cm
  • Mawsynram (East Khasi Hills) – 40 cm
  • Khliehriat (East Jaintia Hills) – 30 cm
  • Chauldhowaghat (Lakhimpur, Assam) – 19 cm
  • Guwahati, Tezpur, Silchar, Numaligarh, Dibrugarh, Majuli – 8–17 cm
  • Amraghat & Dholai (Cachar) – 15 cm and 9 cm respectively
  • Shillong, Barapani, and Nongstein (Meghalaya) – 10+ cm

The IMD and local administrations have urged people to:

  • Avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas
  • Monitor local weather alerts and stay indoors during intense rain
  • Be cautious of landslides in hilly terrain
  • Keep emergency supplies like drinking water, medicine, and dry food ready

Flood Risk in Silchar and Surrounding Areas:

With the Barak River rising and continuous downpours over the past 48 hours, Silchar city and parts of Cachar district are facing urban flooding concerns. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and to prepared for possible evacuation.
