HNPV Virus Total Cases in India Surge to 7

In India 7 cases of HNPV Virus found in children in Bengaluru, Nagpur, Tamil Nadu and Ahmedabad. This surge of the disease case come amidst a surge in respiratory illness in China. However, Union Health Minister JP Nadda assured the people of India that the situation is under control and there will be no risk of outbreak like Covid-19.

He also stated that HNPV is not a new virus. It was first discovered in 2001, and it has been circulating around the world for many years.

The Indian Council of medical Research confirmed 2 cases in Bengaluru, which was detected at Bangalore Baptist Hospital. 1st cases, A 3-month-old female infant, who was diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru with a history of bronchopneumonia. She has been since discharged.

2nd cases, An 8-month-old male infant, who tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with a history of bronchopneumonia. The infant is now recovering.

In Ahmedabad a two-month-old baby, from Dungarpur, Rajasthan tested positive for HMPV on 26 December. This infant has been admitted with respiratory illness and treated and discharge.

Two cases reported in Nagpur, involving a seven-year-old and thirteen years old. They are treated for suspected H1N1 (swine flu), but PCR tests confirmed HMPV. Both the children recovered through outpatient care, according to MIMS.

In Tamil Nadu, Health Secretary Supriya Sahu confirmed two active cases of HMPV in Chennai and Salem. She assured the public that both children are stable, emphasizing that “HMPV infections are self-limiting and can be managed with symptomatic care, proper hydration, and rest.”
