HMPV Virus Detect in Bengaluru India: Two babies found positive

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has detected two cases of HMPV Virus in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India stated, in Today (January 6) PIB released a post. Both cases detected in Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru.

Both the cases were identified through routine surveillance for multiple respiratory viral pathogens, as part of ICMR’s ongoing efforts to track respiratory illnesses nationwide.

It is important to know that HMPV virus is already spreading globally, including India. The cases of respiratory illnesses linked to HMPV have been reported in several countries. According to current data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), there has been no unusual increase in cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in India.

Two cases Found positive of HMPV Virus in India

  1. First case: A 3-month-old female infant, who was diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru with a history of bronchopneumonia. She has been since discharged.
  2. An 8-month-old male infant, who tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with a history of bronchopneumonia. The infant is now recovering.

Important notes is that neither of the affected person have any history of international travel.

Currently, The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation through all available surveillance systems. In the press release it is said that, โ€œICMR will continue to track trends in HMPV circulation throughout the year. The World Health Organization (WHO) is already providing timely updates regarding the situation in China to further inform ongoing measures.

The recent preparedness drill conducted across the country has shown that India is well-equipped to handle any potential increase in respiratory illnesses and public health interventions can be deployed promptly if needed.โ€
