In a major crackdown on fraudulent medical practices, Dergaon Police on Saturday apprehended a 57-year-old fake Ayurvedic practitioner identified as Ranjit Chandra Sen near Kamal Dwara College in Dergaon.

According to police, Sen, a resident of Purana Borpathar in East Karbi Anglong district, had been working as an Ayurvedic doctor at Hazarika Ayurvedic since 2023. He allegedly claimed to possess a valid certificate from an Ayurvedic medical college in Kolkata.

However, investigations revealed that the said college had banned by the Government of India in 2021, and Sen had no valid registration under the Assam Medical Council. The accused has taken into custody and currently interrogated at Dergaon Police Station.

The arrest comes amid an intensified statewide campaign against fake doctors and unregistered medical laboratories. Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that several such operations were being carried out across the state.

“In Silchar alone, police have arrested 15–16 fake doctors. Our operations against these illegal practitioners are ongoing,” CM Sarma said during the foundation-laying ceremony of a super-speciality hospital in Silchar.

The Chief Minister urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicions about medical practitioners’ credentials to the district administration. “Police and local authorities are actively identifying and taking action against fake doctors,” he added.

Highlighting the deceptive practices of some medical establishments, CM Sarma revealed that a few nursing homes tried to mislead authorities by claiming that fake doctors were merely assisting. “We are aware of these tactics and are taking strict legal action against such offenders,” he asserted.

Sarma also praised genuine healthcare professionals for supporting the government’s mission to identify counterfeit practitioners and safeguard public health.

Referring to recent arrests in Silchar, the Chief Minister mentioned Dr. J.P. Das, who allegedly ran Mousumi Hospital and the National Institute of Medical Sciences using a fake MBBS degree from Bangladesh. Das also accused of issuing counterfeit MBBS certificates for money.

The Chief Minister further addressed concerns over unregistered laboratories that had been providing false medical test reports, warning that such malpractices would face stern punishment.
