A violent land dispute turned deadly on Tuesday morning in Sonapur village under Barkhola constituency of Cachar district, leading to the tragic death of an elderly man.
The deceased has been identified as Afas Ali Choudhury, who reportedly died on the spot after being attacked with a sharp weapon during a confrontation over land boundary demarcation.
According to eyewitnesses, the altercation broke out between two parties over the marking of a road boundary. The heated argument soon escalated into a violent clash. In the midst of the chaos, Nasim Uddin, Dilai, and several others allegedly assaulted Afas Ali. Witnesses claimed that Nasim Uddin Choudhury struck the victim on the head with a spade, resulting in his immediate collapse and death.
Hearing the commotion, Afas Ali’s two sons rushed to intervene but were also reportedly attacked by the same group. As the situation spiraled, locals gathered at the scene, and panic spread across the area.
Upon being informed, Gobinda Shil, In-Charge of Bhangerpar Police Outpost, reached the location with a police team and managed to bring the situation under control. Soon after, Debananda Das, Officer-in-Charge of Barkhola Police Station, along with Circle Magistrate Robot Trolar, arrived to conduct a detailed inquiry.
The entire Sonapur area remains tense following the incident. Police have registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend all those involved in the fatal attack.
