Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that it will resolved the longstanding issue of Duplicate Voter ID EPIC number on Friday.
They announced it on a press release on Friday. In a statement, the Election commision acknowledge the presence of multi voters with the same EPIC number. The decision made after detailed discussions between the Commissionโs technical teams and Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from different States and Union Territories.
In a Statement Election Commission stated, โAs regards the issue of duplicate EPIC numbers, the Commission has already taken cognizance of the matter. Irrespective of an EPIC number, an elector who is linked to the electoral roll of a particular polling station can cast his vote at that polling station only and nowhere else. Sample enquiry of over 100 electors reveals that electors with duplicate EPIC numbers are genuine electors. Since the allotment of EPIC series in the year 2000 to the States/UTs, some EROs did not use the correct series. The issue of allotment of duplicate numbers due to incorrect series across States/UTs could not have detected as the States/UTs were independently managing the electoral roll databases.โ
It also added, โThe Commission has now decided to resolve this long pending issue after detailed discussions within the technical teams and concerned CEOs in the next three months by ensuring a unique national EPIC number to the existing electors having a duplicate EPIC number and for future electors as well.โ

The Assam government has directed the Directorate of Information and Public Relations to publicize the ECI initiative, ensuring that voters are well-informed about the steps being taken to eliminate duplicate EPIC numbers. This move aims to enhance transparency and voter awareness across the state.
Largest Data Base in the World
India is the largest data base in the world, with 99 crore registered voters. To keep the records updated, the Election Commission of India (ECI) conducts a continuous updation process, along with an Annual Special Summary Revision (SSR) every year. This revision takes place from October to December, and the final electoral rolls published in January. For States and Union Territories (UTs) facing elections, an additional SSR conducted before the polls.
Process of Electoral Roll Verification
At every booth, a Booth Level Officer (BLO) appointed by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) amongst the officials of the state government.
At every booth, political parties also have the right to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs).
All BLAs have the right to verify the electoral roll of the concerned booth and raise a complaint for anomaly, if any.
After house-to-house field verification, the concerned BLO submits the recommendations to the concerned ERO.
After taking into cognizance the above facts, ERO verifies the details of each elector for updation of electoral rolls.
The draft electoral rolls prepared published on the website and also made available to political parties and the public.
