Director of Assam’s Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) oncologist Ravi Kannan, has been named one of the recipients of the prestigious 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Award. Ramon Magsaysay Award is often referred to as Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel prize. He is selected for the category of Hero for Holistic HealthCare. He is the only one who has been selected for the Award from India.
The award recognizes his exceptional contributions to healthcare and cancer treatment.
Padma Shri Awardee and Visionary Leader Dr. Ravi Kannan
Dr.Ravi Kannan, previously received India’s Padma Shri award for his significant contributions to the health sector. He has instrumental in shaping the landscape of cancer care in the region. He and his wife Seeta moved to Silchar in 2007 to lead the CCHRC. In this region he have made remarkable strides in cancer treatment and patient support.
A Team Effort Towards Success
Kannan humbly acknowledged the award as an honor for the entire hospital team. He stressed that the success of the project is a result of collective effort, encompassing not only the staff within the hospital but also the external support from various quarters.

Under Ravi Kannan leadership, CCHRC’s impact has been profound. The hospital’s follow-up ratio has increased over 90%, from below 50% which is significant improvement. The establishment of clinics in Assam’s Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Dima Hasao hasmade more easier to follow-ups for patients, which is improving region’s cancer care infrastructure.
Advocacy for Inclusive Healthcare
Kannan’s vision of making healthcare accessible for everyone has led him to work towards to established healthcare facilities in every area. His dedication shows through his efforts where he provide cancer care even in rural areas. He also said the Atal Amrit Abhyan scheme which will give government support, it has been crucial in making quality treatment accessible to the economically disadvantaged.

Ravi Kannan is resolute in his belief that cancer is a curable ailment like any other. He also aims to ensure that no individual suffers without treatment due to this disease. He highlighted the need to change the prevailing mindset surrounding cancer, particularly in the northeastern region of India. Lifestyle factors such as tobacco and alcohol consumption, combined with a lack of exercise and awareness, contribute to the region’s higher cancer susceptibility.

Kannan’s parents always aspired for him to serve humanity through medicine. His mother, Indumati expressed her pride in her son’s accomplishments. She said about her son that his dedication and humility have always defined him. Ravi Kannan focus is remains on leveraging this recognition to extend his impact and help more people.
