Deputy Commissioner of Police, Delhi Crime Branch, Amit Goel said reported to ANI, “7 people have been arrested in connection with an international organ transplant racket. The mastermind of this racket was a Bangladeshi. Both, donor and receiver were from Bangladesh. We have arrested a person named Russell, who used to arrange patients and donors and the lady doctor involved in the transplant has also been arrested. Further investigation is underway…”

Delhi Police also said that the people used to charge Rs. 25-30 Lakh in each transplant. The people has been running the organ transplant racket since 2019.

According to DCP the doctor who arrested has links with two or three hospitals. He also said, “Her role in this case was to facilitate organ transplant, even though she knew that the donor and receiver are not related by blood, making her part of the conspiracy.”

According to India’s Transplantation of Human Organs Act (2014), organ donation is allowed only from immediate blood relations such as parents and siblings.

The Indian living donors can only donate their organs to any foreign recipients if they are close relatives. This rule is strictly enforced to prevent illegal organ trade. Also the senior member of the recipient’s embassy must certify the relationship between the donor and recipient. This certification is necessary for the organ donation to be considered valid.
These cases are only considered if no eligible Indian patient is available for the organ donation. This ensures that Indian patients have priority in receiving organs
