A Court employee of Silchar arrested on charges of financial fraud and corruption on December 26. The court employee identified as Naharul Islam Choudhury, 43-year-old, who worked as a “Process Server” at the Lakhipur Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s Court.
He was accused of taking ₹3 lakh in exchange for promising to secure an acquittal in a drug trafficking case. An acquittal is a legal judgment declaring someone not guilty of a crime.
According to reports, on Thursday night Naharul arrested from his residence in Madhurbond after police launched an investigation.
He is now facing bribery charges under the “Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988” and will be presented before a special court in Guwahati.
The complainant, a resident of Bidrohipar under Kachudaram police station, alleged that Naharul failed to deliver on his promise and refused to refund the money. After multiple delays, Naharul issued two cheques totaling ₹2.4 lakh, but both cheques bounced due to insufficient funds.
Police arrived at Naharul’s home to arrest him, but his family tried to mislead officers, stating that he wasn’t at home. However, the police eventually found him and took him into custody.
On Friday (December 27), Naharul was produced in Silchar’s Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, where the police requested a three-day transit remand to transfer him to Guwahati. The request was granted, and further legal proceedings are now underway.
