On August 18, a couple attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Barak River in Silchar. The two of them went to the old Sodorghat bridge in Silchar and jumped from it into the river.
The couple identified as the youth residents of Sonai and the girl residents of Dhutpatil in Cachar district. They both take the decision after having a serious argument. People present saw the incident, but no one was able to stop it.
Rescue operations were going on by the authorities but had to be paused due to bad weather and darkness. But fortunately, they were rescued by the locals alive at a distance of about 1 kilometer. At the time of the incident, some locals of Karathigram were performing Manasa Devi idol Visarjan in the Barak River. They noticed someone struggling in the water and quickly stepped into the river and saved them.
When the couple was rescued, they were in serious condition. First, the locals called the police and sent them to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. The reason behind the suicide attempt is not known, but it is suspected that the family members have not accepted their relationship.
