In an exciting development Chandrayaan-3 India’s third lunar mission has just shared breathtaking images of the moon. These captivating visuals were proudly posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The images feature Earth captured from Chandrayaan-3’s. Lander Image camera and a striking view of the moon taken a day after the spacecraft elegantly entered lunar orbit. This significant achievement occurred on Saturday, August 5 following the mission’s successful launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh on July 14.

The much anticipated moon landing is scheduled for August 23. The latest images provided by ISRO showcase several prominent lunar features. Among these the craters Eddington, Aristarchus and Pythagoras stand out. Along with the impressive expanse known as Oceanus Procellarum or the Ocean of Storms a notable dark plain on the lunar surface. This expansive sea spans over 2,500 km along the moon’s north-south axis covering a vast area of approximately 4,000,000 square kilometers.

In preparation for this historic landing Chandrayaan-3 is poised to undertake a series of precise de-orbiting maneuvers. These carefully planned maneuvers are designed to gradually bring the spacecraft closer to the lunar surface ensuring a safe and accurate touchdown for the Vikram lander. ISRO’s Chief, S Somanath provided insights into the upcoming stages of the mission. Following the deboost process, which slows down the craft, a critical lander propulsion module separation exercise will be executed. This will pave the way for the momentous lunar landing set for August 23.
Mr. Somanath emphasized the mission resilience, ensuring that Vikram, the lander has been meticulously designed to overcome challenges including sensor failures. The propulsion system plays a pivotal role in this effort. Chandrayaan-3’s successful landing will be a remarkable milestone placing India in an elite group of countries. Including the United States, China and Russia that have achieved the feat of landing a spacecraft on the moon. This achievement underscores India prowess in space exploration, showcasing its capability for a precise and secure lunar landing. Stay tuned as we witness this historic event that showcases India’s extraordinary space capabilities.
